What’s Involved in a Tummy Tuck Procedure and How Long Does it Take?

Procedure times vary on the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed and whether you have a full or partial tummy tuck:

• In a full tummy tuck, a long incision is made about the pubic area, and a shorter one near the belly button, so this can be moved. 

• In a partial tummy tuck, the incision above the pubic area is much shorter, and there isn’t one made by the naval as the belly button need not be moved.

Once the incision(s) are made, the skin is separated from the abdominal wall and the muscles are pulled tight and sutured. The skin is pulled tight, the excess of which is removed and the remaining skin stitched back into place.

Tummy tuck surgery normally takes between one and three hours. 

What About Postoperative Recovery?

You will need to rest in bed for several days afterward. Stitches are usually removed between 5-7 days after your procedure. Some patients return to work after a week, but two may be more suitable. You will need to be careful not to do any vigorous activity for six weeks, and it will be several months before you feel completely fine—and up to a year for your scars to heal completely.

Do consult your surgeon in Bali as to when you will be able to fly back home (for example, you may need to stay on the island to have your stitches out and/or attend a follow-up appointment). He or she should be able to give you a rough timeline so you can plan your trip accordingly.
