How Long Does a Neck Lift Take and What Does the Procedure Entail?

Neck lift surgery can correct a number of issues, and no two procedures are necessarily the same. Depending on the exact nature of the procedures you are undergoing, the surgery can be completed in as little as an hour, but may take up to four hours.

To remove small amounts of fat, liposuction may be performed. A small incision is made under the chin, a slim tube inserted and a solution to liquefy the fat injected. The liquid is subsequently sucked out, usually through the same tube–rather like a wet and dry vacuum.

Banding, turkey and wattle neck problems are treated with surgery, with incisions made behind the ears and/or under the chin, with muscles manipulated, excess tissue removed and the remaining skin stretched and stitched where the incisions are made.

What Is the Recovery Time for a Neck Lift?

You will be bandaged and may have drainage tubes inserted after the surgery–although not all surgeons use these–to help remove fluid from the wounds and reduce swelling. They will be removed after a day or two.

Movement in your neck will be limited as it will feel stiff and sore. Over the next week, you will begin to feel less discomfort and the bruising will start to dissipate.

Gentle stretching is recommended and most people return to work after a week or two–but no strenuous lifting or exercise is recommended for six weeks. The tightness in your neck may take a number of months to feel better.
