Laser Eye Surgery in Johor Bahru

The ultimate guide to Laser Eye Surgery in Johor Bahru

Last fact-checked: 12 January 2020

Want to improve your vision? Book a holiday in Malaysia and get laser eye surgery in Johor Bahru – Malaysia’s second-largest city that's fast becoming one of the country’s top medical tourism destinations.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery can be used to treat a range of vision problems including myopia (short-sight), hypermetropia (long-sight) and astigmatism (distorted lenses).

Before you arrange laser eye surgery you will need to see a qualified eye professional who can correctly diagnose your problem (this can be done at home before you fly for a small fee). You also need to be over 18. If you wear contact lenses, be prepared to forego them for between two and four weeks prior to surgery as they can distort the shape of your corneas which will be detrimental to the outcome of your treatment.

Why Undergo Laser Eye Surgery in Johor Bahru?

The destination is popular with residents of Singapore, both as a traditional and medical tourism destination. Singapore is one of the most expensive countries in the world, so by traveling here (just 10 minutes over the causeway on the train), Singaporeans can often save a small fortune.

The city is geared for tourists, with all the usual trappings you’d expect – a plethora of accommodation options; plenty of restaurants; great shopping and the Danga Bay waterfront which offers miles of seafront restaurants and other amenities catering to all age groups.

Malaysia is becoming increasingly popular for Western medical tourists. The prices are considerably less; healthcare facilities are of a high quality and the medical professionals are well-trained and qualified. Coupled with Malaysia’s undoubted draw as a holiday destination – it has beaches, culture, terrific landscapes, UNESCO World Heritage sites and is safe and politically stable – and it’s little wonder why so many people are starting to discover its virtues.

Why Book with Medical Departures?

We know it's daunting thinking about traveling overseas for a medical or surgical procedure, which is why we’ve made it easier. We do background checks on our clinics and doctors, we visit clinics, we confirm qualifications and professional memberships; we look for any criminal or legal proceedings and we collect online patient testimonials. If something doesn’t add up, we don’t list it.

We’d always recommend that you do your own research—it’s always best to equip yourself with as much knowledge as you can about your procedure—and don’t be shy about asking questions from prospective clinics and doctors.

What Is Involved in the Procedure for Laser Eye Surgery?

You are likely to be given some pre-surgery instructions, for example, about not wearing any creams for 24 hours before the procedure.

Before the procedure begins, each eye will be thoroughly cleansed and anesthetic eye-drops applied.

Surgery will be performed on one eye at a time. A suction ring is placed over the eye that is being treated. This is attached to the cornea and will keep the eyeball in place while a flap is made in the cornea. The ring will be removed and a laser is used to remove the corneal tissue based on the calculations made by your ophthalmologist. Upon completion, the flap is gently put back in place.

What Is the Recovery Time From Laser Eye Surgery?

You may have watery eyes and blurred vision which will usually last for a day or two. Some people notice immediate improvements to their vision, whereas it may take a few hours, days or weeks for others. You will have to be careful not to rub your eyes after the procedure for several days so as not to dislodge the corneal flap, which will need time to heal.
