Last fact-checked: 4 December 2019
If you are suffering from baldness or thinning, a hair transplant could be the answer, especially with prices in popular medical tourism destinations, like Thailand, being thousands less than back home.
Keep reading to find out if this innovative procedure is for you, as well as how to book your treatment through Medical Departures at one of our verified clinics.
Am I Suitable for a Hair Transplant?
You may be a suitable candidate, providing:
- Your hair loss is permanent and cannot be treated non-surgically
- It is not caused by medication, medical treatment or stress
- You have sufficient follicles or hair growth than can be used for the transplant
Why Have a Hair Transplant in Thailand?
With a worldwide reputation as a center of excellence for medical tourism, there aren’t many better places to go for a hair transplant than Thailand. Medical tourism is a major industry here and the quality of the care and the facilities are outstanding.
Doctors are well trained and qualified with board certification and memberships of international professional organizations, such as the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons.
Medical Departures background checks all of our listed doctors, including verification of qualifications, professional memberships and experience. This way, you can be confident that your chosen surgeon is reliable and trustworthy when booking through our site.
The hair restoration options that are available in the United States, Europe and Australasia are all available in Thailand. In fact, Thailand is so advanced that there are procedures that you will see performed here, which are rarely done elsewhere, such as beard transplants.
What Is the Procedure for Hair Transplants in Thailand and When Can I Expect to See Results?
There are several different methods for hair transplants:
- FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): where the grafts come from small groups harvested around the scalp and then implanted into the required site
- Strip harvesting: where a whole strip of hair is removed and dissected into smaller groups before implanting into the required site.
- Flap surgery: where a whole section of scalp is removed and replaced with a section containing follicles.
- Scalp reduction: where a section of the bald scalp is removed and the hairline pulled forward to cover the bald spot.
- After the transplant, it is likely that the hair will fall out, but it will start to grow back after three months – thicker and stronger.
It is worth bearing in mind that:
- If you are completely bald, it is highly unlikely a hair transplant will be achievable
- If you are still losing your hair, it is best to wait until the hair loss has stopped, or you will have to continue treatment as and when new bald patches appear
- The improvements look better on thick, curly hair rather than fine hair; although it is still possible with thin hair, it might not look as natural
- You may need multiple sessions over a couple of years
- Hair growth may be slow
- Hair may not be consistent with previous hair growth
How Much Can I Save on a Hair Transplant in Thailand Compared to Home?
A variety of factors will affect the price, including the procedure used, the number of grafts and sessions required, so giving an exact cost is difficult.
However, in Thailand, hair transplants start from around AUD $1,300 (US $900; CAD $1,200; GBP £600; Euros 800), compared to Australia where it is in excess of AUD $3,500 (US $2,400; CAD $3,200; GBP £1,600; Euros 2,200).
