How Long Do Chemical Peels Take and What Is the Estimated Recovery Period?

The time a chemical peel takes depends on the type of peel used. Essentially, a chemical peel actually removes a layer of your skin (chemically burns it). The skin is first cleaned, and then the peel is applied and left on for the required time. For medium peels a topical anesthetic may be used, for deep peels, you may be under sedation. After that, it is washed off or neutralized. If you have very deep peels, you may require some minor bandages for sometimes, otherwise a thick layer of petroleum jelly or any other protective lotion or ointment may be used. A peel can take as little as half an hour to over two hours.

For light peels (also called lunchtime peels) you will be able to move out as normal, you will just need to use sunscreen for a few weeks. It can take up to three weeks for the healing to complete, though deep peels can take up to two months to heal completely.
