Who Is Suitable for a Breast Reduction?

Women with big breasts often have to contend with physical, psychological or emotional issues. It’s common to feel self-conscious when faced with people constantly staring at you, especially at a young age; you may find clothes don’t fit, that it’s difficult to exercise and feel too embarrassed to flaunt your figure. 

Back pain is also a serious issue associated with larger bosoms, which can worsen after weight gain, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

As well as alleviating these problems, breast reduction surgery is an instant way of losing weight—taking off as much as 500 grams per breast. This can help patients look and feel slimmer; find bras that fit well and finally wear the clothes you always wanted to.

Why Should You Have Breast Reduction Surgery in Malaysia?

Unless you have very good insurance and can prove that you need it for medical reasons, a breast reduction is normally classed as an elective procedure, i.e. it is carried out for aesthetic reasons. In countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK and other parts of Europe, the price can be unaffordable for most. Even if your insurance or healthcare service does agree to help, chances are you’ll still be required to pay for most of it.

Do note that if you want to combine surgery with a holiday, make sure you get your travel out of the way before surgery, not after. Following a breast reduction, you will need to rest at or around your hotel for a number of days before flying home. Your surgeon will require you to stay out of the sun for at least two weeks, to allow your treatment wounds to heal properly.

How Long Does Breast Reduction Surgery Take and What Is the Recovery Time?

Breast reduction surgery (or reduction mammoplasty as it is medically known) is a somewhat lengthy procedure. The total time really depends on the shape and size of your breasts and where the doctor intends to place the incisions as there are various ways to do so. 

The surgeon has to cut, remove tissue and fat, restructure the breasts and stitch your skin back together. This usually requires the nipples to be repositioned as well. The surgery is done under general anesthesia and takes between three and five hours. It normally entails an overnight hospital stay.

After the surgery, you will be bandaged up and probably have drains inserted to extract excess fluid. Painkillers will also be prescribed if necessary. You should estimate the downtime to be at least two to three weeks, depending on the pain and restrictions you have. After that, you will be able to resume work, but complete recovery will take around six weeks.

You can consult with your doctor as to when you will be able to fly home from Malaysia following your surgery. 

How Much Can I Save on Breast Reduction Surgery in Malaysia?

In Australia, breast reduction mammoplasty will cost you between AUD 12,000 and AUD 18,000. If you are fortunate enough to get some insurance contribution, you may get only 50 percent of the amount. 

In Malaysia, you can expect to pay around AUD 3,000 to AUD 4,500 for breast reduction surgery, which for some patients can mean savings close to AUD 10,000.
