Last fact-checked: 28 October 2020

Commonly known as a "boob job," this cosmetic procedure is becoming increasingly popular in Mexico, particularly with North Americans and Canadians who can fly into major cities or even drive across the Border.
If you are unhappy with the size of your breasts, you can travel to Mexico, enjoy a pleasant break and undergo surgery—all for much less than the price of the procedure alone back home.
What Is a Breast Enlargement?
Breast enlargement (also known as breast implants, augmentation mammoplasty and breast augmentation) is something that millions of people around the world undergo every year. The surgery is generally sought by women who have always had a small chest, while others may have lost volume loss due to weight loss or pregnancy, or require implants as part of breast reconstruction or gender reassignment.
The enlargement is normally performed using implants that are surgically placed through two inconspicuous incisions. Autologous fat transfer can also be used (as explained further down).
As with any surgery, you will need to have reasonable expectations in terms of the results, so it's important do a little research, work out your goals and desires, and discuss the procedure with a trusted surgeon.
Why Should I Consider Having a Breast Enlargement in Mexico?
The main reason people consider going to Mexico for breast enlargements, as well as any other cosmetic surgery, is the cost savings. Simply put, you can save thousands of dollars by traveling to Mexico—and testimonials from our past patients prove this isn't an exaggeration.
These affordable prices are not due to inferior facilities or expertise, but rather the lower cost of living in Mexico. Premises rental, labor, materials, equipment–they all cost much less in Mexico – and these savings are passed on to you.
Plastic surgery is a much-respected profession in Mexico, and the rigorous training here reflects the high caliber of candidates required in order to successfully complete medical school and the examinations. In the United States, medical students are required to complete four years of medical school and then three to seven years as a graduate medical resident. In Mexico, it is four to five years at medical school, followed by a two-year internship and social service practical training. Specialty surgeons go on to complete an additional four years of practical training, plus another two for sub-specializations.
Choosing a Surgeon Carefully
We have found that the expertise and facilities in Mexico can easily compete with those north found in the United States and Canada. However, we do recommend you choose carefully and do a little homework to find reputable providers.
Qualifications, professional memberships, clinic location and facilities are all an important part of establishing credibility–which is why Medical Departures pre-checks these details and publishes a wealth of useful information on our site, making it easier for you to begin your search for a top-rated surgeon to perform your breast enlargement procedure.
What Materials Are Used in a Breast Enlargement?
The breasts can be enlarged by either placing breast implants or autologous fat transfer. Autologous fat transfer is where fat is removed from another part of your own body by liposuction, processed through a machine and then reinjected into the breasts. It is usually only advised if you only want to increase your breast size a little.
Breast implants are the usual option for most patients. Although typically made from saline or silicone, there are ‘alternative implants’ using biocompatible materials, like soybean oil, which are less harmful than silicone if they leak.
Your surgeon will discuss the merits of each at your initial consultation.
What Is the Procedure for Breast Enlargement and How Long Will it Take?
Breast enlargement surgery is usually performed on an out-patient basis and does not usually require an overnight hospital stay. It usually takes an hour or two to complete the surgery. In this case, it is carried out using local anesthetic and sedatives, although some patients may opt for general anesthetic in the hospital.
If you are having breast implants, you will have already chosen the size and material prior to your surgery. After the anesthetic has been administered, the surgeon will make small incisions in the breast, through which the implants are inserted. There are a number of different surgical incisions that can be made, dependent on your surgeon’s preference and what is most suitable in your case. These can be made:
- Around the colored part of the nipple
- Under the breast in the crease where it joins the chest wall
- Under the armpit.
- Implants may be inserted above or below the pectoral muscle through any of the above.
For the fat transfer method, two techniques are involved: liposuction to remove the fat, and then the procedure to inject the fat into the chosen area of your breasts.
Once your chosen procedure has been completed, the incisions are stitched and bandages or compression garments applied to help the recovery process. You may also have wound drains in place to remove fluid from the area.
What Is the Recovery Time?
You will experience tenderness and soreness for a few days after the operation, and you will experience some bruising and swelling. Most people return to work after a week, providing you don’t have a job that requires too much physical activity. It will be six weeks before you can embark on physical exercise or heavy lifting.
Do consult with your surgeons as to when you will be fit to head home, particularly if you are planning to fly.
