What Does a Breast Augmentation Entail and How Long Does it Take?

When the goal is to increase the size of a woman's bustline, breast augmentation involves the insertion of an implant behind each breast. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will begin by making an incision in the crease under the breast, under the arm or around the nipple. Next, a pocket will be created in which the implant will be positioned.

After the implant is in place, incisions are closed using skin adhesive, sutures, and/or surgical tape. Gauze bandages may be placed over the breasts to assist with healing. This procedure typically takes between one and two hours.

What Is the Recovery Like?

Regarding your recovery, it is worth noting:

• Patients should expect to feel sore and tired for several days following the procedure, although most people can usually be up and around within 24 to 48 hours. Discomfort can usually be alieved using prescribed pain medication.
• Gauze dressings can be removed within several days, after which time patients may be provided with a surgical bra. Individuals undergoing breast augmentation may experience a burning or tingling sensation in the nipples for up to two weeks following the procedure. As bruising fades, this sensation will usually subside.
• Stitches typically can be removed within a week to 10 days following breast augmentation.
• Swelling may last for up to five weeks.
• Patients should follow the advice of their physician regarding when to return to normal activities. Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least two weeks after your procedure. As the breasts are usually sore for several weeks after surgery, direct contact should be avoided during this time of healing.
• Scars from the procedure will usually remain pink and firm for a minimum of six weeks following the procedure. Several months after breast augmentation, the scars should begin to fade in appearance.
