What Is a Body Lift and What Can it Achieve?
Lower, upper and full body lifts are summarized below:
- As part of a lower body lift, medically known as a belt lipectomy, the tummy, buttocks, thighs, and back are toned and shaped through the removal of excess skin and fat cells.
- An upper body lift may use the same surgical technique but typically focuses on the middle back, chest, and breasts.
- When both an upper and lower body lift are to be performed, the procedure is referred to as a total body lift.
Both upper and lower body lifts are performed to tighten or remove excess cellulite, skin, or sagging fatty tissue. Individuals who have experienced a significant amount of weight loss, often following bariatric surgery, may benefit from a body lift. This type of procedure may also benefit women who are interested in returning to their pre-pregnancy bodies.
It should be noted that a body lift is not a weight loss surgery.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Body Lift?
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports a variety of factors may contribute to poor tissue elasticity, causing sagging skin. Such factors include:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Sun damage
- Aging
- Genetic factors
- Significant weight fluctuations
Ideal candidates for body lifts in Mexicali should have maintained a stable weight for at least three months. Preferably, you should have maintained a stable weight for six months to a year before undertaking this procedure.
Additionally, you should be participating in a healthy dietary and exercise program. If you have had LAP-BAND®, gastric bypass, sleeve or any other type of bariatric surgery, it is important to wait a minimum of one year following your weight loss surgery before having a body lift. Women with plans to become pregnant in the future may be advised to wait until after childbearing.

How Long Does a Body Lift Take and What Is Involved?
Body lift surgery can generally take four to eight hours. The procedure is performed using general anesthesia and may require one or two nights' stay in the hospital.
As part of a lower body lift, the physician will generally begin by making a belt-like excision just above the buttocks and outer thighs. Excess skin will be removed and the underlying tissue will be reshaped before the area is sutured closed. The physician will then begin the abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. This involves a horizontal incision made just above the pubic area. Another incision will be made around the navel. The doctor will remove excess tissue and skin as well as tighten the stomach muscles. Liposuction may also be used to remove any remaining fat.
An upper body lift begins with skin removal along the bra line. After this incision is closed, the surgeon will then remove any rolls of fat that may be present in the back and waist areas. Extra skin over the rib cage and under the breasts will also be removed.
A total body lift may involve one or more procedures. In order to reduce the risk of complications, the procedures may be broken into multiple surgeries performed at separate intervals.
In terms of your recovery, it is important to understand that a body lift is a major surgical procedure. As such, it requires significant time to recuperate. Do bear in mind the following post-operative considerations:
- Most patients need to spend between one and three nights in the hospital following the procedure.
- Pain medications may be prescribed to assist in relieving discomfort.
- Drainage tubes will be inserted during the procedure to reduce swelling, which will require care after your release for up to two weeks.
- After a few days, surgical dressings can usually be removed and you can bathe.
- You may be advised to wear a medical compression garment.
- Post-surgical activities are generally restricted for up to six weeks following your procedure.
